The headquarters of Volkswagen Group Japan KK, and the distribution bases of Mercedes-Benz Japan Co.,Ltd. Rover Japan Ltd and Yanase Co., Ltd. are located in the Port of Mikawa waterfront area. Moreover, the Port is increasingly being used by Peugeot and GM, confirming its advantages as a leading location for foreign automobile companies entering Japan.
The Port is ideally located, being near the midpoint of the historic Tokaido Highway and within 300 km of Japan's primary markets, Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Distribution will be facilitated by the opening of the No. 2 Tomei Expressway, to supplement the current Tomei Expressway (approximately 15 km from the Port to the expressway interchange).
>At present, there are over 1,700 hectares of commercial sites on reclaimed land in the waterfront area, with over an additional 500 hectares of land under reclamation. The price of sites is around 120,000 yen per tsubo, or the equivalent of 147,000,000 yen per acre, which is extremely low compared to the major metropolitan areas in Japan.
>Located in the Port's vicinity are Toyota Motor Corp., Suzuki Motor Corp. and their affiliates, making this the center of automobile manufacturing in Japan. The Port is an ideal location for interaction between foreign-capitalized automobile companies and domestic automobile companies.
At the heart of the port area is the City of Toyohashi, with a population of over 350,000. Toyohashi's neighboring city, Hamamatsu, has a population of 555,000. The population of these cities and the surrounding area totals over 2,000,000, and a variety of urban activities are being developed. Moreover, the area is blessed with a beautiful natural environment, including mountains and sea. Unlike people in crowded urban areas, residents in the area enjoy life in a rural setting.
